The Hasmonean Episode: From Rebellion to Kingdom

The Hasmonean era contains two distinct chapters: The rebellion under Mattathias and his sons, followed by the emergence of an independent state and kingdom. The first chapter is universally celebrated as the heroic epoch of Jewish resistance, whereas the second stage is frequently projected in a decidedly negative light. Who is responsible for this dichotomous memory? What sources contributed to this divergence of the Jewish national memory? Can we know what "really" happened?
