A FewWords from the Judges
Another year has gone by and, once again, as Sukkot approaches, with its many scents and colors, we behold the outburst
of fascinating artistic ideas in the
Sukkot Speak
contest for original model Sukkahs. As in previous years, a large number
of models were submitted—nearly 80—depicting the handiwork of individuals and groups from the Jerusalem area and
the rest of the country, who invested hours of study, thought, and creative effort to convey their insights and sentiments
about this temporary structure through their models.
It was no easy task to judge the entries. Even after it was decided to forgo adherence to the Halakhic parameters (such
as the number of walls or type of Sekhakh), we, the panel, still had to select the crème de la crème according to a few
main principles: Is the model aesthetic and does it catch the eye? What is its level of finish and execution? Does it convey
an original and thought-provoking idea? Can the idea be understood simply by looking at the model, or is necessary to
refer to the explanatory blurb to comprehend it? And, in general: Which of the fundamental concepts of the Sukkah are
expressed in the model (transience, the Jewish people's historical memory, going out into nature and using its elements,
hosting the Ushpizin, etc.)? For the models submitted by groups, we also considered the link between the model and the
group's social and spiritual world.
After much deliberation, debate, and animated discussion, we weighed all these components and selected the models
that will be on display at the Israel Museum, the prize-winners, and those that received an honorable mention. But all of
the artists—whether or not their work won a prize or gained public exposure—deserve praise for their effort, investment,
and contribution to the atmosphere of the upcoming holiday by adding a sparkle to its cheerful light.
Wishing all a happy holiday full of creative light,
