Moadim LeSimcha!
We are delighted that the Israel Museum and BEIT AVI CHAI are once again working in partnership to bring to fruition
Sukkot Speak, our Sukkah-creation competition that takes place each year in the Museum's Ruth Youth Wing for Art
Education.
This collaboration reflects our joint commitment to promoting culture in Jerusalem, sharing creative activity, and
celebrating Jewish and Israeli values that resonate with the treasures on view in the Museum's galleries and with the
vision of Beit Avi Chai.
Sukkot Speak aims to engage children and their families in learning about and then creating Sukkot booths that reflect, in
a wide variety of ways, the spirit of the holiday – through individual creations that are full of rich and personally distinctive
interpretations.
Illusions
, the Youth Wing's exhibition theme for this year, underscores the meaning of one of Sukkot's
unique aspects: the notion of the Sukkah as a fragile, temporary dwelling constructed in a manner that suggests a sense
of permanence. Resonating at the same time with aspects of our personal lives, our project seeks to offer its participants
an opportunity to add meaning and substance to their enjoyment of the Sukkot holiday.
The prophet Zacharia says that, in Messianic times, Sukkot will become a universal festival, and all nations will undertake
annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem to celebrate the holiday together. It is in this spirit that we hope that regular Museum
visitors and those visiting for the first time will find viewing
Sukkot Speak
and the Sukkahs that it features a thought-
provoking experience.
We would also like to extend warm thanks to the jury for their excellent work.
At the Israel Museum
, we are grateful to:
Tali Gavish, Head of the Ruth Youth Wing for Art Education, Lena Charash-Zehavi, Rachel Sarfati, and Yona Harel.
At Beit Avi Chai
, our thanks go to Project Director Rony Silfen and all those in the Beit Avi Chai family who took part in
this wonderful initiative.
With wishes for a happy and healthy holiday,
