One Prophet, Two Redemptive Stories

The book of Jonah is central to both Jewish and Chrsitian traditions, but in very different ways. For Jews, Jonah is associated with Yom Kippur and repentance; for Christians, Jesus is seen as a Jonah figure, resurrected from death. How can the same book hold two such divergent meanings? This question will be a jumping off point for understanding more broadly the differences between Jewish and Christian interpretation, and what it might mean for a religious community to uphold its own traditions while respecting the traditions of the other.
