The Battle for the Jewish Future

Although Josephus listed three distinct Jewish groups, the Dead Sea Scrolls suggest a simpler divide: a clash between priestly Judaism and rabbinic Judaism. In the wake of the destruction of the Temple, the early rabbis took control of the narrative, painting the old priesthood as corrupt and out of touch. We will explore this deep ideological battle: a clash between the priests’ “realist” focus on physical lineage and sacred space, and the rabbis’ revolutionary “nominalist” focus on words and choices.
