Under the Hapsburgs and the Ottomans

In this session we will turn to Jews under Habsburg and Ottoman rule, highlighting the late 15th-century creation of a Jewish prefect and his role. We will also study Jewish women in the early modern period and the remarkable case of Shlomo Schneur Zalman, a Jewish courtier who converted to Christianity yet continued to advocate for his former community.
