The Man and His World: Biography, Intellectual Portrait, and Significance

This opening lecture traces the life of Yehezkel Kaufmann from the Ukrainian Pale of Settlement, through studies in Bern and Weimar Berlin, to his years teaching in Haifa and his appointment at the Hebrew University. Beyond biography, the lecture explores Kaufmann’s intellectual character – combining extraordinary scholarly rigor with a passionate commitment to the Jewish future. We examine his debate with Ahad Ha’am over Jewish nationalism, survey his major works, and ask why this towering figure deserves to be far better known today.
