My Life at the Moment

How did the wartime reality – on the home front and at the front lines – affect the local art scene? Five prominent Jerusalem artists present works created during the two years of the multi-front war: from the massacre and surprise attack on Israel on Simchat Torah 5784 through to the ceasefire on the eve of Simchat Torah 5786.

 

The events of these two years in Israel could have filled many long years of history in any other country – events that intersected with artistic creation in different ways: direct and indirect, explicit and abstract. The works, executed in diverse media – painting, drawing, photography, and print – provide a window into the artistic workshop: almost instinctive reactions that investigate and probe, evidence of the moods and feelings that breached the protected studio walls and rattled them fiercely.

 

The exhibition’s title is taken from a line by Jerusalem poet Israel Eliraz from his book “Is Clarification Expected.” Eliraz taught us to look at reality through art, to isolate the moment with all the contradictions and emotions it carries. This is the perspective we seek to offer here as well, after two years of war that hasn’t really ended. “The account is yet to be settled.” This is our life right now.
