Searching for Biblical Jerusalem

In the mid-nineteenth century, Jerusalem and the biblical landscape became a fascinating arena for explorers, engineers, scholars, and adventurers. Through stories of remarkable personalities and discoveries, we will meet pioneers such as Charles Wilson and Charles Warren, descend beneath the streets of Jerusalem, and follow the work of the Palestine Exploration Fund and other early research organizations. Their surveys, maps, tunnels, and discoveries laid the foundations for a new way of investigating the past. But were these men archaeologists in the modern sense? What drove them – science, faith, imperial ambition, or simply the thrill of discovery? And how much of the archaeology we know today began with their extraordinary explorations?
