The Zionist Horizon: Building Hope from the Depths of Despair

In this session we will investigate the intrinsic link between existential despair and the Zionist ethos as a catalyst for national renewal. Beginning with Avi Sagi’s philosophical analysis of the human need for a hopeful future, the session will move through Rabbi Nachman Krochmal’s vision of historical continuity following catastrophe. We will end the discussion by examining Ahad Ha’am and A.D. Gordon, for whom Zionism was also an expression of hope developed from within a state of despair.
